Consider the following: 96 billion pounds of food are wasted in the USA every year. Food banks help store and distribute that food to those who need it. A total of 36 million Americans — including 12 million children live on the brink of hunger — and the numbers are rising. In Northeast Georgia 20% of our people are at risk of hunger and 12% of those are children under 18. For many families having access to free food means that can meet their health care needs or pay their power bills. In Northeast Georgia approximately 21% of people live at or below the federal poverty level. Nearly 50% of children in Hall County alone are in these low income families. That equates to 22,000 hungry children today.
